Lam Research (LRCX) — threat to the moat
Customer support fell $749 million in fiscal 2024, because much of it is upgrades and older tools bought with the same budgets as new ones.
Customer support is steadier than systems revenue, not steady. It fell from $6,732.6 million in fiscal 2023 to $5,983.7 million in fiscal 202412, a drop of $748.9 million3. Investors who treat it as a subscription will be surprised in the next downturn.
The reason is what the line contains. Besides spares and service, it includes upgrades and Reliant's non-leading-edge tools4, both of which customers buy with capital budgets. When budgets are cut, those purchases are cut too.
Lam's income statement does not separate the parts, so the truly recurring portion cannot be measured. The company reports one segment and one segment gross margin, 52.2% in fiscal 202656.
Lam's cost structure explains why management still cuts in downturns. The 10-K says cost management programmes aimed at aligning expenditure with revenue "sometimes result in restructuring charges"7, and fiscal 2024 carried $43.4 million of them in cost of goods sold and $18.2 million in operating expenses8. The service business softens the cycle; it does not remove the need to manage it.
The number to follow is customer support revenue in the first quarter after systems revenue turns down. A fall of more than 10% in that quarter would say most of the line behaves like capital spending.
