A Third of Every Dollar of Fab EquipmentNarrow moat

Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet

Lam can sell into about 36% of the world's wafer fab equipment spending, and has grown faster than that market for three years in a row.

The size of Lam's opportunity is set by one industry number: wafer fab equipment spending, called WFE. On the fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 call management said it expected calendar 2026 WFE "in the low $150 billion range", up from a prior outlook of $140 billion1. The chief financial officer put Lam's served market at "36%, 36.5% this year" of that total2.

The market grew by $10 billion in one outlook.

Being able to sell into a third of the market is a result of the moat, not a gift. Lithography, inspection and several other steps belong to other companies; deposition, etch and clean, where Lam claims "leadership and expertise"3, are the steps that multiply as chips stack and shrink. Management's target is a "high 30s SAM" as a percentage of WFE4.

Lam has also grown faster than its market. Management said "we see 2026 shaping up to be our third consecutive year of relative outperformance" to WFE5. Revenue rose 26.0% in fiscal 20266.

Outperformance is measured against the market's own swings. It says Lam is gaining share of each dollar, not that the dollars will keep coming.

The geography of that spending is widening. Lam's revenue from the United States was $1,528.9 million and from Southeast Asia $1,245.9 million in fiscal 20267, together 12.0% of the total8. New fabs outside the three large Asian markets are small today and are adding to the market Lam can serve.

The newer regions are growing as a share too. The United States rose from 6% of Lam's revenue in the September 2025 quarter9 to 9% in the June 2026 quarter10.

The served-market share is the figure that tests this facet. If the chief financial officer's 36% to 36.5%11 slips back toward the low 30s, the technology inflections are going to tools Lam does not make.

Moat trajectory: Widening

SAM about 36-36.5% of WFE in 2026, targeted at high 30s.

How much of each dollar of fab spending Lam can address; a slide toward the low 30s would mean the inflections went elsewhere.
