⚠ The Backlog Nobody PublishesLow threat
Lam Research (LRCX) — threat to the moat
Lam publishes no backlog, and its deferred revenue covers about a third of one quarter's sales.
Lam does not report a backlog, and that makes the business harder to read than its customers' spending plans suggest. Deferred revenue of $2,434.0 million1 covers down payments and shipped tools awaiting acceptance, not orders that are merely agreed.
Against quarterly revenue of $6,722.2 million in the June 2026 quarter2, the deferred balance is about a third of one quarter's sales3. Most of what Lam will earn next year has not been paid for yet.
That leaves investors relying on management's quarterly guide, which covers only the next three months: $8.10 billion plus or minus $400 million for the September 2026 quarter4. Lam gives no annual revenue guidance.
The cover has thinned. Deferred revenue of $2.68 billion in June 2025 was about 52% of that quarter's revenue of $5,171.4 million567; a year later the ratio was about 36%8. Lam entered fiscal 2027 with less paid-in work relative to its sales than it entered fiscal 2026.
Short visibility is part of the equipment business, and customers can push out shipments when their plans change. The warning would be deferred revenue falling while guidance still rises, a sign that revenue is being recognised faster than new commitments are arriving.
