⚠ Costs in Four CurrenciesLow threat
Lam Research (LRCX) — threat to the moat
Lam bills mostly in dollars but pays its Asian engineers and factories in won, ringgit and rupees, and sells in yen to Japan.
Putting people beside the customer puts costs in the customer's currency. The 10-K says Lam is exposed to exchange rates "primarily related to revenues denominated in Japanese yen and expenses denominated in euro, Korean won, Malaysian ringgit, and Indian rupee"1. Most of its revenue is billed in dollars; a large part of its payroll is not.
Japan shows the revenue side. Lam's revenue from customers in Japan was $2,171.1 million in fiscal 2026, 9.3% of the total23, and it expects approximately $490.2 million more from shipments to Japan that it has not yet booked4. A weaker yen reduces what those sales are worth in dollars.
Lam hedges some of this. It enters foreign currency contracts for anticipated yen revenues and for expenses in the other four currencies5, and it discloses no figure for how much a given move in exchange rates would cost.
Tax is the other cost of an international footprint. Lam's effective tax rate was 12.1% in fiscal 2026 against 10.1% the year before6, and uncertain tax positions that would affect the rate if recognised were $735.5 million7. A change in where profits are taxed could move earnings more than any exchange rate.
The exposure is modest against a 35.3% operating margin8. It would matter if the dollar weakened sharply against the won and the ringgit while the yen fell, the combination that raises costs and cuts yen revenue at the same time. A drop of more than a point in operating margin attributed to currency would say the hedges are not enough.
