The Memory MakersNarrow moat
Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet
Three memory makers are among Lam's four most significant customers, and memory went back to 46% of systems revenue in the June 2026 quarter.
Memory makers are Lam's oldest and largest customers. Three of the four companies the 10-K names as most significant, Micron, Samsung and SK hynix, make memory1, and in fiscal 2018 memory was 78% of Lam's system shipments2.
Korea, home to Samsung and SK hynix, shows their weight. Lam's revenue from Korea was $4,505.3 million in fiscal 2026, 19.4% of the total34, and it has swung with memory spending: $3,924.7 million in fiscal 2021, $2,874.0 million in fiscal 2024, then back up56.
The June 2026 quarter showed memory returning. Memory was 46% of systems revenue, split evenly between DRAM and nonvolatile memory at 23% each7, and Korea was 20% of revenue8. Management said NAND revenue more than doubled sequentially9.
The memory makers buy Lam's tools because each generation of memory needs more of them. Management expects the served market per NAND wafer to double from 128 layers to more than 50010.
The memory makers have been on Lam's list of large customers for a decade. The fiscal 2018 10-K named Micron, Samsung and SK hynix among the customers above 10% of revenue in fiscal 201811, and they are among the four most significant customers for fiscal 2024 to 202612.
Over the longer run the memory customers have grown with Lam. Revenue from Korea was $1,127.4 million in fiscal 201413 and $4,505.3 million in fiscal 202614, about four times as much15.
They are also the least steady buyers. The swing in Korea revenue, down 29% from fiscal 2022 to fiscal 202416, is the pattern to expect again. Memory's share of systems revenue over the next two quarters is the figure to watch; if it holds near half, the NAND upgrade cycle has begun, and if it falls back below a third, the June quarter was a burst.
NAND revenue more than doubled sequentially in Q4 FY2026.
The memory makers' weight in new-tool sales; a fall below a third would say the June quarter was a burst.
