⚠ Three Rivals Named in EtchModerate threat
Lam Research (LRCX) — threat to the moat
Three rivals named in Lam's own 10-K compete for every etch slot, and a slot lost at qualification stays lost for the node.
Lam's own filing is plain about who else sells etch tools. "In the etch market, our primary competitors are Applied Materials, Inc.; Hitachi, Ltd.; and Tokyo Electron, Ltd."1 Three well-funded companies are trying to win the same qualification slots at the same customers.
The installed base helps Lam but does not decide each contest. A fab picks the tool for each new application and node, and the 10-K warns that Lam "may experience difficulty in selling to a given customer if that customer has qualified a competitor's equipment"2. A lost slot is lost for the life of that node.
Etch is not the only market with company. The same filing names Applied Materials, ASM International and Wonik IPS in deposition, and Screen, Semes and Tokyo Electron in wet clean3. In each of Lam's three markets there are at least three named rivals, and Applied Materials and Tokyo Electron each appear in two of them.
Lam's defences in etch are partly legal. It holds United States and foreign patents covering aspects of its products and processes, and keeps certain processes and techniques as trade secrets4. Those protect recipes rather than markets: a rival with its own process can still be qualified if its results are better.
What would show this threat is working is a quarter in which the conductor etch installed base stops being described as growing, or Akara's doubling slows. Management reports both on its calls, and both are worth reading for a change of wording.
