Margins at a Twenty-Year HighWide moat

Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet

Lam's gross margin reached its highest in twenty years in the June 2026 quarter, and management is aiming higher still.

Lam earns more on each dollar of revenue than it did for most of its history. Gross margin was 50.5% in fiscal 2026, against 48.7% in fiscal 20251 and 43.4% in fiscal 20152. In the June 2026 quarter it was 51.7% on a GAAP basis3, and management called it "our highest quarterly gross margin in 20 years"4.

Seven points higher than in FY2015.

The operating margin rose further, because costs grew slower than revenue. It was 35.3% in fiscal 2026 against 32.0% the year before5 and about 15% in fiscal 20156.

The 10-K explains the fiscal 2026 increase as "largely due to favorable customer mix"7, partly offset by tariffs. Management's target is to drive "gross margins to the mid-50% level" and operating margins to the mid-40% level over the next several years8. The September 2026 quarter was guided at 52.0% gross and 39.5% operating9.

High margins in an equipment company are a sign of pricing power. Customers pay because the tool's process results are worth more than the price difference to a rival.

The quarter-to-quarter path shows the momentum. The GAAP gross margin was 49.8% in the March 2026 quarter and 51.7% in June10, and the operating margin rose from 35.0% to 37.4%11. The September quarter was guided higher again, to 52.0% gross12.

On management's own measure, which excludes some items, the June 2026 quarter's gross margin was 52.0% and operating margin 38.4%13. The gap between the GAAP margin and management's measure is small, so there is little adjustment to argue about.

The margin is also cyclical, and the target is not a promise. The gross margin in the September 2026 quarter against the 52.0% guide14 is the next check; a fall below 50% while revenue grows would say pricing is weakening.

Moat trajectory: Widening

GM 50.5% in FY2026; targeting mid-50s.
