✦ The Future BetsNarrow moat

Lam Research (LRCX) — the future bets

Lam is spending more than $3 billion on labs to win the next process steps, into a year analysts expect to bring 50% revenue growth.

Lam's future bets are less about new businesses than about winning the next set of process steps. Four matter most. It plans to invest more than $3 billion over five years in its research lab network1. It expects advanced packaging to grow more than 70% in 20262. It has a new family of dry photoresist tools for extreme-ultraviolet lithography and a five-year co-development agreement with IBM34. And it is preparing for what management called "an extraordinary setup for WFE growth" in 20275.

Analysts expect revenue to rise by half.

The market has already priced a good deal of that. Analysts expected fiscal 2027 revenue of $34.92 billion, 50.3% above fiscal 2026's $23.23 billion6, and non-GAAP earnings of $9.51 a share7. Lam's own guidance covers only the September 2026 quarter: $8.10 billion plus or minus $400 million8.

What connects the bets is the lab. A new process step is won by the company whose tool the customer tests first and trusts, and Lam's Oregon lab, a 120,000-square-foot facility that will increase cleanroom lab space at its Tualatin research centre by "more than 50%"9, is built to be that place.

Lam has also changed its management and board for the next phase. It elevated Sesha Varadarajan to chief operating officer from 6 March 202610, appointed Anirudh Devgan, chief executive of Cadence Design Systems, to its board in February 202611, and two long-serving directors are retiring on 2 November 2026, reducing the board from 12 to 1012.

The bets also compete for cash with shareholder returns. Lam returned $5,121.9 million in fiscal 202613 and has about $4.04 billion of repurchase authorisation left14, while capital spending is rising for the labs1516.

The bets are sound and mostly incremental. What would test them is the consensus itself: fiscal 2027 revenue coming in well below $34.92 billion would say the 2027 setup was a normal upswing, not the step change the lab plan is sized for.

The growth already expected; a result well below it would say 2027 was a normal upswing.
