Forty Thousand Conductor Etch ChambersWide moat
Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet
More than forty thousand Lam conductor etch chambers run in fabs today, and each one is a place where the next tool is judged against Lam's.
Lam's strongest position is in etch, the step that carves the patterns into a wafer. On the fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 call management said Lam is the industry leader with an "installed base of more than 40,000 chambers" in conductor etch1. A chamber is the working unit of a tool, the part a fab qualifies, runs and maintains, so forty thousand of them is forty thousand places where Lam's process recipes are already running in production.
The product list shows how wide the franchise is. The 10-K lists Kiyo, Versys Metal and Akara for conductor etch, Flex and Vantex for dielectric etch, Syndion for deep silicon etch, and Argos, Prevos and Selis for selective etch2. The newest of these is growing from a small base: management said that since its launch, "Akara's installed base has doubled every year"3.
An installed base this large does two things for Lam. It gives the company what its 10-K calls "cycles of learning" from the tools already in the field4, which feed the next generation of products. And it is the base on which the spares, service and upgrade business described on The Installed Base Pays Twice is built.
The chamber count is a lower bound, not a share figure, and Lam does not publish a market share for etch. What can be checked is the result: systems revenue, which includes new etch tools, rose 29.5% in fiscal 2026 to $14,885.5 million5.
Lam describes Akara in its 10-K as delivering "a high degree of process control for next-generation logic and memory devices"6, including gate-all-around architectures and advanced DRAM and NAND nodes. A new product that is doubling its installed base each year7 is how the chamber count keeps rising after the older families mature.
The chamber base also sets the size of the service business. Customer support revenue of $8,347.2 million in fiscal 20268 comes from the whole fleet, of which conductor etch is one part, and each chamber added by a record systems year becomes a customer for spares for years afterwards.
The position rests on staying the reference tool when each new node is qualified. A fall in the growth of systems revenue below that of the overall equipment market for two years in a row would say the chamber base is no longer converting into new orders.
Akara installed base doubling each year; systems revenue +29.5% in FY2026.
The base that new etch orders are qualified against; a count that stops rising would mean new nodes are going elsewhere.
