The Line That Fell LessNarrow moat

Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet

When Lam's new-tool sales fell 16.6% in fiscal 2024, customer support fell 11.1%, a cushion rather than a floor.

The value of an installed base shows in a bad year. In fiscal 2024, when Lam's revenue fell 14.5%, systems revenue dropped 16.6% from $10,695.9 million to $8,921.6 million, while customer support-related revenue fell 11.1% from $6,732.6 million to $5,983.7 million123.

Support grew in FY2023 and fell less in FY2024.

The year before was even clearer. In fiscal 2023 systems revenue fell 5.5% while customer support revenue rose 14.0%4. Fabs that had stopped buying new tools kept running the old ones, and kept buying parts and service for them.

The result is a larger share of revenue that does not depend on new fabs. Customer support was 33.2% of revenue in fiscal 2019, 40.1% at the fiscal 2024 trough and 35.9% in fiscal 20265. Over the eight years from fiscal 2019 it accounted for about 36% of Lam's revenue6.

That does not make Lam a service company. Customer support also fell in the downturn, and much of it, the Reliant tools and upgrades, is itself capital spending by the customer.

The whole last cycle tells the same story. From the fiscal 2022 peak to fiscal 2025, customer support grew from $5,904.8 million to $6,944.3 million while systems revenue went from $11,322.3 million to $11,491.3 million78: 17.6% growth against 1.5%9.

The cushion is real but partial. The next downturn will test whether customer support can hold closer to flat; a fall as large as systems revenue's would mean the line has become as cyclical as the tools it supports.

The share of revenue tied to the installed base; it rises in downturns and should not fall much below a third.
