⚠ Customer Consolidation Concentrates the RiskModerate threat

Lam Research (LRCX) — threat to the moat

Four customers took 55% of Lam's revenue in fiscal 2026, so each node won or lost is a large share of the business.

The qualification lock is strongest when there are many customers making many decisions. The chip industry has moved the other way. The 10-K says that with the "consolidation of customers within the industry" the equipment market has seen "rapid changes in demand"1.

The largest customer is smaller than in 2021; the top four are larger.

Lam's own customer list shows the result. In fiscal 2026 four customers accounted for approximately 16%, 15%, 12% and 12% of total revenue2, together 55%3. In fiscal 2019 the four largest were 15%, 14%, 14% and 14%4.

A concentrated customer base makes each qualification decision worth more to Lam, and each loss worse. It also gives the customers negotiating power, since each knows how much of Lam's revenue it represents.

The peak was higher still. In fiscal 2018 five customers accounted for approximately 25%, 14%, 14%, 13% and 12% of total revenue5, together 78%6. The fiscal 2019 downturn followed.

The figure to follow is the combined share of the customers above 10%, which Lam discloses every year. A rise above 60% would make the moat more dependent on a handful of relationships than it has been in this decade.
