CompetitorsNarrow moat
Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet
Lam's biggest rival is its own size, its newest rivals were created by export rules, and the company it nearly merged with is now a neighbour.
Lam's 10-K names its competitors market by market. In deposition the primary competitor is Applied Materials, with ASM International and Wonik IPS in atomic layer and plasma-enhanced deposition; in etch, Applied Materials, Hitachi and Tokyo Electron; in wet clean, Screen, Semes and Tokyo Electron1. Every one of Lam's three markets has at least three named rivals.
The four relationships that matter most are four different kinds. Applied Materials is the rival in the same chambers, and at $376.36 billion it is almost exactly Lam's size2. China's domestic toolmakers are rivals that export controls helped create. KLA is the company Lam once agreed to acquire, in a merger agreement later terminated3. And third-party parts makers compete for the spares that follow every tool Lam installs4.
Competition in this industry is mostly settled at qualification, when a chipmaker picks the tool for each step of a new node. Price matters less than process results, which is why Lam's gross margin reached 50.5% in fiscal 20265. The contest is continuous but slow: a lost selection costs years, and a won one pays for years.
Lam's market value was $384.36 billion on 24 September 20266, above Applied Materials and KLA but below ASML's $662.45 billion7.
Lam also defends its position with legal tools. It holds United States and foreign patents and pending applications, holds exclusive licenses under certain third-party intellectual property, and keeps certain processes and techniques confidential as trade secrets8. Patents rarely decide an equipment contest on their own, because each fab's process is different, but they raise the cost of copying a qualified recipe.
Competition has not stopped Lam from gaining share of the market it serves. Management said 2026 was shaping up as its "third consecutive year of relative outperformance" against wafer fab equipment spending9, which means the named rivals together grew slower than Lam in each of those years.
Competitive pressure would show first in the gross margin. A margin falling below 50% in a year of rising revenue would mean rivals are forcing Lam to price for share.
Margins rising; share contests settled node by node.
Pricing power against named rivals; a fall below 50% as revenue grows would mean price competition.
