Upgrades Sell Twice Into the Same FabNarrow moat
Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet
Lam sells much of its new technology as upgrades to chambers already in the fab, which keeps the customer and charges again.
Lam does not have to sell a new tool to sell new technology. The 10-K says many of the technical advances in its newest products "are also available as upgrades", which give customers "a cost-effective strategy for extending the performance" of existing lines1. An upgrade keeps the chamber, the qualification and the customer, and adds revenue.
That makes the installed base a sales channel. Upgrades are counted in customer support-related revenue, together with service, spares and non-leading-edge tools2, and that line was $8,347.2 million in fiscal 2026, up 20.2%3.
The effect is to raise the cost of switching. A fab that can move its existing Lam chambers to the next process with an upgrade has one more reason not to qualify a rival's new tool, and Lam earns from the fab's older lines as well as its new ones.
The upgrade business is not reported separately, so its size is a matter of inference. What Lam does report is that its customer support business has grown faster than the installed base4, which is consistent with more revenue per chamber.
The customer support group's stated purpose is "to maximize installed equipment performance"5. An upgrade is the most direct way to do that, and it keeps the fab's process on Lam's platform for another node.
Upgrades are counted in Lam's end-market table, which covers "leading- and non-leading-edge equipment and upgrade revenue"6. That is one reason the foundry and memory percentages cannot be converted into systems dollars: part of what each market buys is upgrades to tools it already owns.
The claim fails if customer support revenue per quarter stops rising while the installed base keeps growing. Record levels in three consecutive quarters, the last $2,472.4 million7, are the current evidence.
Customer support revenue up 20.2% in FY2026.
The line that includes upgrades to installed chambers; growth below installed-base growth would mean less per chamber.
