⚠ Tariffs and the Cost of GrowthLow threat

Lam Research (LRCX) — threat to the moat

Tariffs on aluminium and steel and a $3 billion lab plan are costs Lam must absorb to reach its mid-50s margin target.

Lam's margin gains face costs that are already visible. The 10-K says fiscal 2026 gross margin gains were "partially offset by aluminum and steel tariff-related spend"1. More of Lam's supply chain now carries tariffs than a few years ago.

Capital expenditure and intangibles ($M)396.7FY2024759.2FY2025966.4FY2026Lam Research Form 10-K FY2026, cash flow statement
Capital spending more than doubled in two years.

Investment is the second cost. Lam plans to invest more than $3 billion over five years in its lab network2, and capital expenditure was $966.4 million in fiscal 2026 against $396.7 million in fiscal 20243. Some of that will run through the income statement as depreciation.

The mid-50s gross margin target4 assumes these costs are absorbed by higher volumes. If growth slows, the fixed costs stay.

Some costs of growth also appear as working capital. Accounts receivable rose $1,962.1 million in fiscal 20265, and inventory ended the year at $4,276.1 million6. Both are money tied up before a sale turns into cash.

The check is the full-year fiscal 2027 gross margin. A result below fiscal 2026's 50.5%7 in a year of higher revenue would say tariffs and investment are costing more than scale is saving.
