⚠ Customers Want to Own Their DataLow threat
Lam Research (LRCX) — threat to the moat
Lam's largest customers run the world's most advanced fabs and can build their own analytics rather than buy Lam's.
Selling data services to Lam's own largest customers is harder than selling them chambers. Lam's biggest customers, Micron, Samsung, SK hynix and TSMC1, run some of the most sophisticated factories in the world and treat production data as a trade secret. They can build their own analytics and ask Lam only for the raw information.
With four customers at 55% of revenue2, their preferences set the size of the market. If they decline to buy fleet services, the business is limited to smaller fabs.
Lam also faces the general risk that information from its tools is protected by the customer's security rules, which limit how much Lam can learn from the fleet.
The four most significant customers named in the 10-K are Micron, Samsung, SK hynix and TSMC3. Customers of that size set the terms on which data is shared, as they set payment terms: five customers owed Lam 72% of its receivables at the end of fiscal 20264.
The test is disclosure. Lam does not report fleet-service revenue; if it begins to, and the figure is small relative to the $8,347.2 million customer support line5, the data layer is a feature rather than a moat.
