ServicesWide moat

Citigroup (C) — moat facet

Services earns about a quarter of Citi's revenue and more than two-fifths of its business profit, most of it as a spread on deposits.

Services is Citi's best business and, since 2025, one of its two largest. It earned $22,636 million of revenue in 20251, about 27% of Citi's total of $85,225 million2, and $8,187 million of income from continuing operations3.

Both lines grew by about four-fifths.

Inside it are two businesses. Treasury and Trade Solutions, which runs payments, collections, liquidity and trade finance for companies and governments, earned $16,646 million; Securities Services, which holds and administers securities for investors, earned $5,990 million4. The moat pages on the Services network cover why clients stay.

It is paid two ways. Most of the money is net interest income on the deposits clients leave with Citi: $15,001 million in 20255, about 66% of the segment's revenue6. The rest, $6,385 million, is fees for transactions, clearing and custody7. About 69% of the revenue is earned outside North America8.

The history on the current basis starts in 2021. Revenue was $12,539 million that year, then $16,132 million, $18,637 million, $20,268 million and $22,636 million9, about 81% growth in four years10. Much of that came from interest rates: net interest income more than doubled while fees rose about 29%11. The earlier segments, before the 2024 reorganisation, are not comparable.

It is highly profitable for a bank. Its efficiency ratio fell from 61% in 2021 to 48% in 2025, and its return on tangible equity rose from 15.8% to 24.6%, on $33.0 billion of allocated capital12. Average deposits were $878 billion and average loans $93 billion in 202513.

The latest quarter was the best yet. Revenue was $6,382 million, up 18%, net income $2,584 million, up 51%, and the return 30.9%14. Average deposits reached $1,017 billion15.

The loan book inside Services is growing too. Average loans were $103 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 10% on a year earlier16, against $93 billion for 2025 as a whole17.

Both halves grew in the second quarter of 2026. Treasury and Trade Solutions earned $4,739 million, up 18%, and Securities Services $1,643 million, up 16%18. U.S. dollar clearing volume was 46 million instructions in the quarter, up 5%19.

Costs grew at half the pace of revenue. Services operating expenses were $7,682 million in 2021 and $10,813 million in 202520, about 41% more, while revenue rose about 81%21. That gap, not any single product, is what took the efficiency ratio from 61% to 48%. Credit costs stayed small: Services net credit losses were $56 million in 2025 on $93 billion of average loans22, though it set aside $360 million that year against other assets and held-to-maturity securities23. In the second quarter of 2025 its provision was $353 million, which Citi said was primarily driven by transfer risk24, the risk that a country stops money leaving.

Citi's own outlook is for revenue to grow at a low-to-mid-single-digit annual rate and for the return to average the mid-20s through the cycle25. That is a slowdown from the last four years, because the rate tailwind has passed. A return below 20% in a year of falling rates would mean the franchise had been flattered by the cycle; holding the mid-20s through one would confirm it as the moat.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Revenue $12.5bn (2021) to $22.6bn (2025); RoTCE 24.6%.

The size of the best business; growth below the low-to-mid-single-digit plan after rate cuts would mean the network was losing price.
