Equities: Up 45% in a QuarterNarrow moat

Citigroup (C) — moat facet

Citi's equities desk grew 45% in a quarter by lending to funds, which is a moat only if the funds stay.

Equities is where Citi is catching up. The business earned $5,664 million in 20251, about a quarter of Markets revenue. In the second quarter of 2026 it earned $2,301 million, up 45%, driven by derivatives on higher client activity and prime services2. Prime balances, the cash and synthetic prime brokerage Citi provides to funds, were up nearly 60%3.

Equities led the quarter.

Prime brokerage is the part of equities that behaves like a relationship. A hedge fund that keeps its financing and securities with one broker is costly to move, and the broker earns on every day the positions stay open. Citi's Investor Day named equities as a place it wants to grow, alongside prime and cash equities4.

Growth here is bought with balance sheet. Markets average trading account assets were $603 billion in the second quarter of 2026 against $547 billion a year earlier5.

Even after the jump, equities is the smaller business. It earned $2,301 million in the quarter against $4,706 million for fixed income6, about half7.

The business has recovered from a slump. Equities revenue was $4,993 million in 2021, $4,312 million in 2022 and $3,969 million in 2023, then $5,009 million in 2024 and $5,664 million in 20258, about 43% above the trough9. The first quarter of 2026 brought $2,080 million10.

Citi is spending to keep it. Its Investor Day listed an "Equities platform to drive Prime and Cash" among its investment themes11, and prime balances were up nearly 60% in the second quarter of 202612.

The first half of 2026 alone brought $4,381 million of equities revenue1314, about 77% of the whole of 202515.

Equities rose from a small base, and the test is whether it keeps the gain. If prime balances fell back while markets stayed active, the funds would have come for price and left when a rival matched it.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Equities $2.3bn in Q2 2026, up 45%; prime balances up nearly 60%.

The growth part of Markets; a fall with markets active would mean the new prime clients came only for price.
