Rates and Currencies: $11.7 BillionNarrow moat

Citigroup (C) — moat facet

Citi's currency desk earns on the same flows as its payments network, which makes it steadier than most trading.

Citi's largest trading business is the one that fits its network. Rates and currencies earned $11,749 million in 20251, about 52% of Markets revenue of $22,409 million2. Spread products and other fixed income added $4,996 million and equities $5,664 million3.

Half the trading floor is rates and currencies.

The currency desk and the payments network feed each other. A multinational that pays suppliers through Treasury and Trade Solutions converts currency to do it, and the bank that sees those flows can quote tighter prices. Citi runs trading floors in nearly 80 countries and a proprietary network in over 90 countries and jurisdictions4, which is the same map as the payments business.

The desk is steady rather than spectacular. In the second quarter of 2026 rates and currencies revenue rose 1%, with higher foreign-exchange volumes offset by lower revenue in rates5. Most of the quarter's growth in Markets came from elsewhere.

The growth in fixed income came from the other half. Spread products and other fixed income revenue rose 25% in the second quarter of 2026, driven by financing and credit trading6.

The line has been flat for three years. Rates and currencies revenue was $8,729 million in 2021, jumped to $11,735 million in 2022 as central banks raised rates, fell to $10,924 million in 2023 and $10,225 million in 2024, and was $11,749 million in 20257, about the same as 20228.

Citi's Investor Day tied the currency business to the payments network explicitly, promising "Continued growth in FX as we deepen with our clients as well as partner with Services to drive synergies"9.

The quarter-on-quarter figure was slightly lower: $3,247 million in the second quarter of 2026 against $3,311 million in the first10. Citi's stated priority for Markets includes to "Maintain strength in Fixed Income"11.

What would weaken it is the link to Services. If currency revenue fell while Services cross-border value kept rising, clients would be sending Citi their payments and taking their foreign exchange to another dealer.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Rates and currencies $11.7bn of $22.4bn Markets revenue in 2025.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Rates and currencies revenue, 2025
$11,749M (about 52% of Markets revenue)

The trading line tied to the payments network; a fall while cross-border value rose would mean clients took their FX elsewhere.
