⚠ Advisory Fell in the Best QuarterLow threat
Citigroup (C) — threat to the moat
Citi's deal boom came from underwriting, while its advisers earned less.
The record quarter had a soft spot. Citi said investment banking growth came from debt and equity capital markets, "partially offset by a decline in Advisory"1. Advisory revenue was $390 million in the second quarter of 20262.
Advisory is the part of investment banking least tied to a bank's balance sheet. Clients hire the adviser they think is best, not the one that lends them most. A decline there while underwriting surged suggests Citi's gains came where its lending and distribution help, and not where judgement alone is sold.
The change of metric complicates the comparison. From the second quarter of 2026 Citi reports investment banking revenues rather than fees3.
The mix has shifted within a year. Advisory was about 41% of investment banking fees in 202545 and about 25% of investment banking revenue in the second quarter of 202667.
The fall is recent and quarter-on-quarter. Advisory fees were $649 million in the fourth quarter of 20258, $505 million in the first quarter of 2026 and $390 million in the second9, about 40% lower in two quarters10.
The fall came after advisory's best year: fees of $1,908 million in 2025 against $1,785 million in 2021 and $1,017 million in 202311.
Advisory revenue is the gauge. A second year in which advisory shrank while the market for mergers grew would say the franchise was an underwriter with an advisory desk attached.
