$416 Billion Across BordersWide moat

Citigroup (C) — moat facet

Citi moves a rising stream of other companies' foreign-exchange payments, and the stream is the moat.

The clearest evidence of the Services moat is the traffic on it. Citi counts the total value of cross-border foreign-exchange payments processed through its own platforms, and the series rose from $279.5 billion in 2021 to $311.6 billion, $358.0 billion, $379.7 billion and $416.4 billion in 20251, a rise of about 49% in four years2. The second quarter of 2026 added $115 billion, up 13% on a year earlier3.

Up about half in four years.

The dollar-clearing count tells the same story from another angle. Citi processed 146.2 million U.S. dollar clearing instructions in 2021 and 177.1 million in 20254, about 21% more5. Commercial card spend went from $38.6 billion to $71.2 billion over the same years6.

Why does volume on a network become a moat? A company paying suppliers in thirty currencies wants one bank that can move the money, hedge the currency and report the balance the same day. Citi's Services business offers products in over 90 countries7, and building that list of local licences, clearing links and branches is the work of decades. A rival can win a single corridor; it is much harder to win the whole map.

Other traffic measures rose too. Commercial card spend on Citi-issued corporate cards was $20 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 12%8. Citi's Investor Day put the growth of cross-border transaction value at about 10% a year since 20229.

The flow was higher in the fourth quarter of 2025 than in any quarter since at least 2024. Cross-border transaction value was $90.7 billion in the first quarter of 2024 and $115.2 billion in the fourth quarter of 202510, and $115 billion again in the second quarter of 202611.

The first quarter of 2026 brought $106 billion12.

The figures here are Citi's own, reported in its supplement, and they measure throughput rather than price. Should the annual cross-border value stop growing for a full year while world trade kept expanding, the network would be losing flow to someone else's rails.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Cross-border value $279.5bn (2021) to $416.4bn (2025).

Flow through Citi's payment rails; a year of no growth while trade grew would mean clients were moving flow elsewhere.
