⚠ Seventy-Five Percent Fixed IncomeLow threat
Citigroup (C) — threat to the moat
Three-quarters of Citi's trading revenue comes from bonds, rates and currencies.
Citi's trading revenue is concentrated in one kind of market. Fixed income earned $16,745 million of Markets' $22,409 million in 20251, about 75%2, and equities $5,664 million.
That concentration ties the desk to rate volatility and currency flows. When central banks move, bond and currency trading is busy; when they sit still for a long time, it quietens. Equities, which grew fastest in the latest quarter, is too small to offset a slow year in fixed income.
The international tilt adds a second dependence. Markets earned $14,020 million outside North America and $8,389 million inside it in 20253.
Within fixed income, the largest line barely grew in the latest quarter. Rates and currencies revenue rose 1%, with foreign-exchange volumes offset by lower revenue in rates4.
The smaller fixed-income line is still below where it was. Spread products and other fixed income earned $5,386 million in 2021, $3,995 million in 2023 and $4,996 million in 20255, about 7% below 20216. Rates and currencies carried the growth.
The quarterly swing is large. Fixed income earned $4,578 million in the first quarter of 2025 and $3,554 million in the fourth7.
Over four years fixed income grew faster than equities. Fixed income revenue rose from $14,115 million in 2021 to $16,745 million in 2025, about 19%, and equities from $4,993 million to $5,664 million, about 13%89. International revenue went from $11,795 million to $14,020 million over the same years10.
Fixed income growth is the measure. In the second quarter of 2026 it rose 7%11; a full year of decline in fixed income while equities grew would show the desk depending on its smaller half.
