The Private Bank: $2.7 BillionNarrow moat

Citigroup (C) — moat facet

Citi's private bank uses the global network to keep very rich clients, but it is growing slower than the rest of Wealth.

The Private Bank is the part of Wealth built for the richest clients, and it grew out of Citi's global network. It earned $2,676 million in 20251 and $769 million in the second quarter of 2026, up 5%, on higher deposit spreads and investment fees2.

The Private Bank grew least but one.

The international footprint is what Citi sells here. In its 2021 strategy review Citi said it would focus its consumer banking in Asia and Europe on four wealth centres, Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates and London, and exit the rest3.

Private banking relationships are long and personal, and a client who has built a lending, custody and investment arrangement across several countries rarely moves it. The weakness is that the same clients are courted by every global bank and independent manager.

The longer series shows the same modest pace. Private Bank revenue was $2,332 million in 2023, $2,386 million in 2024 and $2,676 million in 20254.

The line is smaller than it was. Private Bank revenue was $2,970 million in 2021 and $2,811 million in 2022 before falling to $2,332 million in 20235; 2025's $2,676 million was still about 10% below 20216.

Citi is spending to change that. Its Investor Day put "Deliver a global Private Bank experience" first among its Wealth priorities, alongside growth in Asia-Pacific7, and listed "Private Banker and Advisor hiring" among its investments8. Quarterly revenue was $571 million in the first quarter of 20249 and $769 million in the second quarter of 202610.

The recovery faded in the second half of 2025. Private Bank revenue was $664 million and $731 million in the first two quarters and $656 million and $625 million in the last two11.

Revenue was $769 million in the second quarter of 2026, up 5%, on higher deposit spreads and investment fees12.

Five per cent growth in a record quarter is modest. Private Bank revenue growing more slowly than the market value of client assets for two years would mean the clients were placing their new money elsewhere.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Private Bank $2.7bn (2025); Q2 2026 up 5%.

The top of the wealth franchise; growth below that of client assets would mean new money was going elsewhere.
