Securities Services: $35 Trillion HeldWide moat

Citigroup (C) — moat facet

Citi's custody arm holds trillions for other institutions, and clients almost never move trillions.

The second half of Services is custody. Securities Services holds and administers securities for investors and issuers, and Citi reported assets under custody or administration of $31.4 trillion at the end of 20251 and $35 trillion in June 20262. Revenue grew from $3,352 million in 2021 to $5,990 million in 20253, about 79%4.

Up about 79% in four years.

Custody is a scale business with long contracts. A pension fund or asset manager that settles trades, collects dividends and reports holdings through one custodian in dozens of markets has little reason to change: the fee is small against the assets, and a conversion carries operational risk the client bears itself. That is why the book grows mostly by winning mandates and by markets rising, and rarely shrinks.

Citi's version sits on the same network as its payments. Securities Services "connects investors and issuers across global markets"5, and it held $146 billion of average deposits in 20256. In the second quarter of 2026 its revenue was $1,643 million, up 16%7.

Growth has not slowed yet. Securities Services revenue rose from $5,165 million in 2024 to $5,990 million in 20258, about 16%9.

More of the custody business is interest than its name suggests. Securities Services net interest income went from $903 million in 2021 to $2,763 million in 2025, about three times, while its non-interest revenue rose from $2,449 million to $3,227 million, about 32%1011. Interest was about 46% of the line's revenue in 202512.

Citi's Investor Day put the growth of assets under custody or administration at about 15% a year from 2022 to 202513, faster than the fee revenue. Some of that growth is market prices, which lift the assets held without any new client choosing Citi.

In the second quarter of 2026 the fee side led: non-interest revenue rose 21% and net interest income 10%14.

The line is still a quarter of Services. Revenue growth that fell behind the growth of assets held for two years running would mean the business was buying mandates with price.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Securities Services revenue $3.4bn (2021) to $6.0bn (2025).

Custody earnings on a sticky asset base; growth below that of assets held would mean mandates were bought with price.
