⚠ Spend Up 11%, Revenue Up 1%Moderate threat
Citigroup (C) — threat to the moat
Citi's cardholders spent 11% more in the latest quarter and Citi's card revenue rose 1%.
The latest quarter showed how little extra spending is worth to the issuer. U.S. credit card spend volume was $176 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 11%1. Segment revenue was $4,521 million, up 1%2.
The gap is the reward economics on other pages. More spending means more interchange, but also more points, miles and payments to partners, and those rose faster. Revenue growth came only from net interest income3.
That leaves the segment dependent on borrowing, which is what grows when households are stretched. A card book growing its interest income in a good economy is healthy; one growing it because customers cannot pay down balances is not.
Spending also rose 15% on the first quarter, to $176 billion from $152 billion4. Revenue fell 5% over the same three months5.
The spending growth is all in one kind of card. General-purpose card spend was $125.6 billion in the fourth quarter of 2021 and $152.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025, about 21% more, while private-label spend fell from $16.7 billion to $13.9 billion, about 17% less67. Store cards are shrinking inside a book that grows.
Interest is what the segment keeps. Net interest income rose 5% in the second quarter of 2026 to $5,180 million, while non-interest revenue fell to minus $659 million8.
Revenue per dollar of loans has been slipping. Card revenue was 10.67% of average loans in the second quarter of 2025 and 10.53% in the fourth9. Citi's chief executive referred to "short-term headwinds from investments in our U.S. Consumer Cards portfolio"10.
Revenue growth well below spend growth for a full year would mean the partners and the reward programmes were taking the whole increase.
