Sixty-Nine Percent Outside AmericaWide moat

Citigroup (C) — moat facet

Citi's moat is a map: most of what Services earns comes from countries where few American rivals can follow.

Citi's network is valuable because it is abroad. In 2025 Services earned $15,729 million internationally and $6,907 million in North America1, so about 69% of the franchise's revenue came from outside the region2. Citi does business in nearly 160 countries and jurisdictions3, and says its vision is "to be the preeminent banking partner for institutions with cross-border needs"4.

Services revenue by region, 2025 ($M)International — 69%North America — 31%Citigroup historical supplement, 3 April 2026
Two-thirds earned abroad.

This is the part of the moat hardest to copy. A domestic bank can match Citi's technology and price in New York. Matching its licences, local clearing memberships and branches in dozens of emerging markets would take years and a regulator's patience in each. The strategy review of 2021 kept this network while closing the consumer banks in many of the same countries: Citi said it would exit consumer franchises in 13 markets and keep four wealth centres5.

The footprint also shows in where deposits are booked. At the end of 2025 Citi held $734,662 million of deposits in U.S. offices and $668,911 million outside6.

Citi's documents do not agree on the size of the map. Its annual report says it does business in nearly 160 countries and jurisdictions7, while its earnings release says more than 1808. Either figure is far beyond what a domestic rival would need to match.

The American half has been growing faster. Services revenue in North America rose from $3,744 million in 2021 to $6,907 million in 2025, about 84%, and international revenue from $8,795 million to $15,729 million, about 79%910. The international share has slipped a little, from about 70% to 69%11, so the American clients have been growing a little faster than the foreign ones.

The shift shows by quarter too. North America was about 27% of Services revenue in the first quarter of 2024 and about 31% in the fourth quarter of 20251213.

The international share is the number to follow. A drop in the non-U.S. share of Services revenue below 60% would mean the multinational clients were keeping their foreign cash with local banks.
