Markets and BankingNarrow moat

Citigroup (C) — moat facet

Citi's trading and lending businesses are big and well placed, but they earn only a little more than their cost of capital.

Citi's institutional businesses other than Services are large and earn less. Markets made $22,409 million of revenue and $6,192 million of net income in 2025, and Banking $6,384 million and $940 million1. Their returns on tangible equity were 11.6% and 10.2%2, against 24.6% in Services.

Near the cost of equity until the latest quarter.

The advantage they have is the network. Citi's trading floors in nearly 80 countries and its proprietary network in over 903 put the currency and rates desks next to the payments business, and Citi's management says Markets kept a "top 3 position"4. Corporate loans connect the same clients to cash management and trading, which is why Citi moved revenue credit from Banking to the other two segments in 20265.

The weakness is capital. Markets carried $53.5 billion of allocated tangible equity in 20256, the most of any segment, and earned 11.6% on it. The latest quarter was better: Markets returned 17.0% and Banking 18.0%7, in a quarter Citi called its "best quarterly revenue in a decade"8.

The second quarter of 2026 lifted both. Markets net income was $2,387 million, up 32%9, and Banking net income $350 million, up 276%10.

The growth in Markets has come from financing clients. Citi's Investor Day reported prime balances, the financing it provides to funds, up about 30% a year from 2022 to 202511. Average Markets loans rose from $111 billion in 2021 to $141 billion in 202512, about 27%13.

The first half of 2026 shows the two businesses' different sizes. Markets earned $4,982 million of net income in the two quarters and Banking $654 million1415.

Banking's return moved most: RoTCE of 18.0% in the second quarter of 2026 on $8 billion of tangible equity, against 4.1% a year earlier16.

Citi's Investor Day set a near-term Markets target of 11.5% to 13% and a medium-term goal above 13%17. The target is itself a verdict: a narrow moat that earns a little over its cost of capital. Markets returns below 10% in a year of normal activity would put it below even that.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Markets RoTCE 14.8% (2021), 7.1% (2023), 11.6% (2025).

Return on the largest capital user; below 10% in a year of normal activity would put the franchise under its cost of capital.
