SubscriptionWide moat
Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — moat facet
Palo Alto's subscription revenue grew from a fifth of the company to more than half in eleven years, and its growth rate has been falling since 2023.
Subscription is now more than half of Palo Alto's business: $6,239 million in fiscal 2026, about 54.3% of revenue12, up about 25.4%3. It is the line on which the platform strategy is built.
What is inside is everything sold as a recurring service: the security services that run on firewalls, such as threat prevention and URL filtering; the Prisma cloud security and secure access products; Cortex, including XSIAM; and, since February 2026, CyberArk's software-as-a-service identity products. Much of what Palo Alto calls Next-Generation Security ARR, $9.10 billion at year end4, is recognised here.
The history is the story of the company's transformation. Subscription revenue was $212.7 million in fiscal 2015, about 22.9% of revenue56. It passed $1 billion in fiscal 2019, $1,032.7 million7, and $4 billion in fiscal 2024, $4,188.5 million8. It grew about 36% a year over eleven years9, and faster than product revenue in every year since fiscal 2016.
Customers pay for subscriptions in advance, often for several years, which is why deferred revenue is larger than a year's revenue. Palo Alto is moving some customers to annual billing, which smooths revenue but spreads the cash.
The line's profitability is not disclosed separately from support. Together, subscription and support earned a gross margin of about 69.2% in fiscal 2026, down from about 72.5%10, largely because amortization of acquired technology from CyberArk and Chronosphere is charged here.
The acquisitions add to this line directly. CyberArk and Chronosphere brought $1.6 billion of NGS ARR by the third quarter11, most of it subscription revenue once recognised. That is why fiscal 2026 growth rose back to about 25.4% after about 18.8% in fiscal 202512, and why fiscal 2027 will be the cleaner test of the underlying pace.
Subscription revenue has grown faster than product in every year from fiscal 201613, which is why its share rose from 22.9% to 54.3%14. The pace of that shift has slowed because the line is now so large; each point of share now requires more than $100 million of extra subscription revenue15.
Growth has slowed from its peak. It was above 30% every year from fiscal 2017 to fiscal 2023, about 25.6% in fiscal 2024 and about 18.8% in fiscal 202516, before the acquisitions lifted it to about 25.4%. The line that would change the verdict is fiscal 2027 subscription growth, when CyberArk is in both years; growth below 18% would mean the organic slowdown of 2025 has resumed.
Subscription 54.3% of revenue, +25.4%.
The line the platform is built on; growth below 18% with CyberArk in both years would mean the 2025 slowdown has resumed.
