Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — moat facet
Product revenue has shrunk from half of Palo Alto's sales to a fifth, and its fiscal 2026 growth was flattered by CyberArk's licences.
Product is Palo Alto's oldest revenue line and now its smallest: $2,280 million in fiscal 2026, about 19.9% of revenue12. It grew about 26.5% in the year3, the fastest of the three lines, but part of that was a change in what it contains.
What is inside the line is hardware and software licences. Palo Alto's firewall appliances are the core; management said "hardware represents about 10% of total company revenue"4, about half of the product line5. The rest is software, including virtual firewalls, and since February 2026 "our product revenue also includes on-premise software licenses of certain identity security offerings"6, the CyberArk licences.
The history is steady growth with two stalls. Product revenue was $492.7 million in fiscal 20157 and grew every year until fiscal 2020, when it fell to $1,064.2 million from $1,096.2 million89. It grew again, then barely moved between fiscal 2023 and fiscal 2024, $1,578.4 million to $1,603.3 million10, the year Palo Alto was giving products away to win platform deals. It reached $1,801.9 million in fiscal 202511. Over eleven years it compounded at about 14.9% a year12, far slower than the recurring lines.
The product is paid for once. A customer buys an appliance or a perpetual licence and then pays annually for subscriptions and support, which is why product revenue is the leading edge of the other two lines.
Profitability is good but slipping. Product gross margin was about 77.1% in fiscal 2025 and about 75.1% in fiscal 202613, and management expects "rising commodity costs to persist in our hardware business"14. Palo Alto reports only one segment and gives no operating profit by line15.
The geographic mix of product sales is not disclosed separately, but the company's hardware is assembled by an electronics manufacturing services provider using some sole-source components16, which ties this line more closely than the others to supply chains and trade policy. Inventory write-downs, $71 million in fiscal 2025 and $4 million in fiscal 202617, fall on this line alone.
Hardware carries the tariff risk in the 10-K, which says import tariffs have affected some components, "increasing our costs and potentially requiring us to further raise prices on our hardware products"18. Price rises in a line that is about half hardware would lift revenue but could slow the refreshes that bring new customers.
The outlook depends on the hardware refresh and on CyberArk's licences, which will lift the growth rate for one more year before they lap. Product revenue in the fourth quarter was $738 million19. The number that would change the verdict is fiscal 2027 product growth without the CyberArk licences: flat or negative would mean new customers are entering the platform more slowly.
Product +26.5% in FY2026, including CyberArk licences.
The leading edge of the recurring lines; flat growth without the CyberArk licences would mean fewer new customers.
