Twenty-Two Deals, $30 BillionNarrow moat
Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — moat facet
Palo Alto has spent about $30 billion on twenty-two acquisitions since 2019, four-fifths of it in the latest year.
Palo Alto has built its platform largely by buying companies. From fiscal 2019 to fiscal 2026 it booked twenty-two acquisitions with total purchase consideration of about $30.0 billion1.
The early deals were small and many. In fiscal 2019 alone it bought Twistlock for $378.1 million and Demisto for $474.2 million, among seven acquisitions totalling about $1,526 million23. In fiscal 2021 it bought Expanse for $797.2 million, Crypsis, Bridgecrew and Sinefa, about $1,209 million in all45. Then came Talon for $458.6 million and Dig for $255.4 million6, the IBM QRadar SaaS assets for $1,143 million and Protect AI for $635 million7.
Fiscal 2026 was different in scale. Chronosphere at $2,951 million, CyberArk at $21,061 million, Koi at $231 million and Portkey at $117 million8 added up to about $24.4 billion9, more than four times everything bought in the previous seven years.
The deals have a pattern. Palo Alto buys a young company with a product in a category next to one it already sells, puts it into one of its platforms and sells it to its installed base. The QRadar purchase was meant to "help accelerate the growth of our Cortex XSIAM business"10. The installed base is what makes the acquired products worth more to Palo Alto than to their founders.
The IBM deal is a useful example of the method. Palo Alto paid $500 million in cash and recorded $649 million of contingent consideration for the QRadar SaaS assets11, a total of $1,143 million, to "help accelerate the growth of our Cortex XSIAM business"12. It bought customers as much as technology.
Buying well is a skill, and Palo Alto has shown it. The latest year's spending was about $24.4 billion13. Another year of multi-billion-dollar purchases would mean the platform still needs to be bought rather than grown.
FY2026 acquisitions $24.4bn; two more closed after year end.
How much of the platform is still being bought; another multi-billion year would mean growth still needs purchase.
