Next-Generation Security ARR: $4.2 Billion to $9.1 BillionNarrow moat

Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — moat facet

Palo Alto's headline software metric more than doubled in two years, but about a fifth of it arrived with two acquisitions.

Palo Alto Networks asks to be judged on one number, and that number has grown fast. Next-Generation Security annualized recurring revenue, the company's measure of its newer software and cloud products, was $4.2 billion at the end of fiscal 2024, up 43%1. It was $5.6 billion a year later2 and $9.10 billion at 31 July 2026, up 63%3.

More than doubled in two years, part of it bought.

The definition matters. NGS ARR leaves out hardware and the older subscriptions attached to firewalls4, so it tracks the part of the business the platform strategy is meant to grow, not the part it inherited. Against fiscal 2026 revenue of $11,480 million5, the metric is equivalent to about 79% of the company's annual sales6, which shows how far the mix has moved from boxes toward software.

The quarterly path shows where the acceleration came from. NGS ARR was $5.9 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, up 29%7, and $6.3 billion in the second, up 33%8. Then it jumped to $8.1 billion in the third quarter, a figure that included $1.6 billion from CyberArk and Chronosphere9. About a fifth of the third-quarter total had been bought rather than sold10.

That distinction is the whole argument of this page. Growth of about 30% before the two acquisitions is the evidence that platformization works on its own terms: customers adding more Palo Alto products once they have one. Growth above 60% after them is evidence that Palo Alto can buy large businesses and fold them into the same metric, which is a different skill with a different cost, taken up on the acquisition pages.

The company's guidance for the metric has moved up through the year. In August 2025 it guided fiscal 2026 NGS ARR to $7.00 billion to $7.10 billion11; after the third quarter, with the acquisitions included, to $8.90 billion to $8.95 billion12. It finished at $9.10 billion13.

The moat case here is modest but real. Recurring software revenue that grows about 30% a year organically, from customers who already run the firewall, is a sign of switching costs being put to work. The fiscal 2027 guidance is the test: NGS ARR of $11.075 billion to $11.175 billion, growth of 22% to 23%14, now with the acquired ARR in the base. A result below the bottom of that range would say the organic engine is slower than the headline suggested.

Moat trajectory: Widening

NGS ARR $9.10bn, +63%, including acquired ARR; FY2027 guide +22-23%.

The metric Palo Alto asks to be judged on; FY2027 guidance is $11.075-11.175bn, and a miss would expose the organic pace.
