The Distributors: Four at 74.6%, Two at 30%Narrow moat

Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — moat facet

Palo Alto's largest distributor handled more than a third of its revenue in 2020 and 15% in 2026.

For years Palo Alto depended heavily on a few distributors. In fiscal 2019 four of them represented 31.8%, 22.1%, 10.7% and 10.0% of total revenue1, about 74.6% together2. In fiscal 2020 the four represented 34.4%, 12.1%, 11.8% and 10.5%3.

Halved and then some.

The dependence has fallen steadily. Three distributors above the 10% threshold represented 33.2%, 12.2% and 10.6% in fiscal 20214, and 18.8%, 14.4% and 11.0% in fiscal 20255. In fiscal 2026 "two distributors represented 10% or more of our total revenue, representing 15 % and 15 %"6.

The largest distributor's share fell from 34.4% in fiscal 2020 to 15% in fiscal 20267. Some of that reflects the shift toward software and cloud subscriptions sold through marketplaces, and some reflects CyberArk's own channel added in fiscal 2026.

Distributors are logistics and credit providers more than decision-makers; the customer chooses Palo Alto and the distributor fulfils the order. But a distributor handling a third of revenue has leverage over terms, and Palo Alto has recently lengthened payment windows for its distributors, as the Paid in Advance pages show.

The decline was not a straight line. In fiscal 2024 four distributors again crossed the 10% threshold, at 21.2%, 13.2%, 13.2% and 11.4%8, about 59.0% in total9, before the share fell to 44.2% in fiscal 2025 and 30% in fiscal 202610. The trend is down, but one year's figure can reverse.

The trend is favourable for Palo Alto. The combined share of the distributors above 10%, 30% in fiscal 202611, is the measure; a return above 45% would mean the channel is regaining the leverage it had.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Largest distributor 34.4% (FY2020) to 15% (FY2026).

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Largest distributor share of revenue
15% (FY2026), from 34.4% in FY2020

The single largest channel dependency; a rise back above 25% would restore the old leverage.
