⚠ The Biggest Platform Grows SlowestModerate threat
Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — threat to the moat
Palo Alto's largest platform is guided to grow in the low double digits, putting the burden of growth on its smaller businesses.
The platform that earns most of Palo Alto's money is the one management expects to slow. Network & AI Security grew 17% in fiscal 2026 to $8.35 billion1, and the company guides to "network and AI security revenue growth of low double digits" in fiscal 20272.
That platform contains the hardware firewalls, which are about 10% of company revenue3, and whose costs are rising with memory prices4. It also contains the secure access service, where Palo Alto competes with Zscaler and others.
If a business that is about three-quarters of revenue grows in the low teens, the other two platforms must grow very fast for the company to meet its guided revenue growth of 23% to 24%5, much of which is a full year of CyberArk.
The network platform's mix makes it sensitive to hardware cycles. Hardware is about 10% of company revenue6, all of it inside this platform, and management expects commodity costs to keep rising7. A slower hardware refresh would hit the network platform first and hardest, while leaving Cortex and Idira untouched.
This threat is about the base, not the growth engines. Network & AI Security growth below 10% in fiscal 2027 would mean the installed base is eroding faster than the platform strategy can replace it.
