Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — threat to the moat
Without the $776 million of deferred revenue bought with CyberArk, Palo Alto's prepaid balance grew slower than its sales.
Not all of the growth in Palo Alto's prepaid balance was earned from its own customers. The CyberArk purchase accounting assumed $776 million of deferred revenue1.
Take that out and the picture changes. Total deferred revenue rose from $12,751.9 million to $14,756 million in fiscal 20262, about 15.7%; without the CyberArk balance the increase was about 9.6%3, slower than organic revenue growth of about 14.4%4. Chronosphere's deferred revenue is not separately disclosed, so even that figure is slightly flattered.
A prepaid balance growing slower than revenue can mean customers are paying annually instead of for several years upfront, which Palo Alto has encouraged. It can also mean fewer multi-year renewals.
The CyberArk purchase accounting shows the scale of what was assumed. Alongside the $776 million of deferred revenue, Palo Alto took on $1,303 million of convertible notes and recorded $6,279 million of intangibles5. The prepaid balance was the smallest of the three large items.
The number to follow is deferred revenue growth against revenue growth in fiscal 2027, when both years include the acquisitions. If the balance again grows slower than sales, the float that funds the business is shrinking relative to it.
