The Backlog Nobody Breaks DownNarrow moat

Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — moat facet

Palo Alto's revenue has no customer above 10%, but its $21.2 billion backlog is never broken down, and single deals now run past $100 million.

Palo Alto discloses no concentration in its $21.2 billion of remaining performance obligations1, and that is a separate question from revenue concentration. Revenue is recognised a little at a time from tens of thousands of customers; the backlog can be dominated by a few very large, multi-year contracts signed in a single quarter.

Largest deals disclosed on the Q4 FY2026 call ($M)126Global telecoms leader72IT service provider53Global payments platformQ4 FY2026 earnings call, Motley Fool transcript
Single deals above $100 million.

The large deals on the fourth-quarter call give a sense of scale. Management described "$126 million agreement with the global telecoms leader", a "$72 million transaction with a premier IT service provider" and a "$53 million platformization deal with the leading global payments platform"2. The same quarter included a nine-figure benefit from one AI model customer moving to Chronosphere3.

Contracts of this size are platform deals, and they are where the moat is built. They are also where discounts are deepest and where a single renewal decision can move the backlog by hundreds of millions.

Current RPO, the portion due within 12 months, was $9.3 billion, up 34%4. The rest, about $11.9 billion5, sits further out and is more exposed to a few long contracts.

The company's own guidance implies continued backlog growth. It expects RPO of $25.2 billion to $25.4 billion at the end of fiscal 20276. The filings will say how much is due within a year; they will not say how much comes from the largest customers.

This is a gap in disclosure rather than a known risk. Should total RPO grow much faster than current RPO, now $9.3 billion7, it would mean the backlog is increasingly built on a few long-dated deals.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Current RPO $9.3bn, +34%; deals up to $126M disclosed.

Contracted revenue due within a year; total RPO growing much faster would mean reliance on a few long deals.
