Customers Who Now Pay AnnuallyNarrow moat

Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — moat facet

Palo Alto is letting more customers pay a year at a time, trading some upfront cash for easier platform deals.

Palo Alto has been changing how its customers pay. On the fourth-quarter call management said annual billings were "~30% of total bookings, up from 27% in fiscal 2025"1. A customer billed annually pays one year at a time instead of several years upfront.

More customers pay a year at a time.

The shift has a purpose. Large platform deals are easier to sign when the customer does not have to find three years of budget at once, and annual billing smooths the company's own revenue. It also explains part of why billings slowed after the February 2024 reset.

It has a cost too. Cash that used to arrive upfront now arrives in instalments, so the float that funds the business grows more slowly than contracts. That is visible in the backlog: RPO grew 34% in fiscal 20262, faster than deferred revenue, which grew about 15.7%3.

The terms given to distributors have loosened as well. The payment window in distributor agreements was 30 to 45 calendar days in fiscal 20254 and 30 to 75 days in fiscal 20265, the subject of the threat below.

The annual-billing shift also changes how cash flow looks quarter to quarter. A customer paying annually generates a bill every year at renewal rather than once at signing, which makes cash flow smoother but more dependent on renewals actually happening. Adjusted free cash flow margin was 38.0% in fiscal 2025 and 38.4% in fiscal 20266, so far unaffected.

For the moat this is neutral: the commitment is the same, only the timing of cash changes. Annual billing was about 30% of bookings in fiscal 20267; a rise well above a third would start to show in slower free cash flow growth.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Annual billings about 30% of bookings, from 27%.
