Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — threat to the moat

The share of Palo Alto's backlog due within a year has fallen from 55% to 44%, so part of its growth is longer contracts.

Palo Alto's backlog is growing, but a smaller share of it arrives soon. In fiscal 2019 about $1.7 billion of $3.1 billion was due within 12 months1, about 55%2. In fiscal 2026 it was $9.3 billion of $21.2 billion3, about 44%4.

Less of the backlog is near.

That means contracts have lengthened. Longer contracts lock customers in, which is good for the moat, but they also flatter the headline RPO growth rate: a five-year deal adds more to RPO than a three-year deal for the same annual spend.

The near-term portion, current RPO, is the better guide to next year's revenue. It was $9.3 billion, up 34%5, including the acquisitions.

Current RPO grew as fast as total RPO in fiscal 2026, both 34%67, which suggests contract length stopped lengthening in the latest year. The decline in the near-term share happened mostly between fiscal 2019 and fiscal 20258. Another year of equal growth would mean the trend has ended.

If the share due within a year keeps falling below 44%, more of the reported backlog growth will be coming from contract length rather than from new or larger customers.
