Employers: Too Many to Matter One by OneNarrow moat
UnitedHealth Group (UNH) — moat facet
UnitedHealthcare's employer customers are so numerous that its 10-K says their credit risk barely concentrates at all.
UnitedHealthcare's commercial customers are employers, and there are enough of them that none matters alone. The 10-K says concentrations of credit risk in receivables "are limited due to the large number of employer groups"1. Commercial membership was 29,650,000 at the end of 2025 and 29,920,000 in June 202623.
The Employer & Individual business had revenue of $79,228 million in 2025, up from $76,494 million in 20234, and $19,992 million in the second quarter of 20265. Its domestic part was $75,940 million in 20256.
The mix within it is shifting toward employers that keep their own risk: fee-based members rose to 22,265,000 by June 2026 while risk-based members fell to 7,655,0007. Those employers buy administration and network access, and switching them means moving every employee's coverage at once.
This is the healthiest part of the client base from a concentration point of view: many customers, none large, with switching costs on each.
Total commercial membership has barely moved: 27,315,000 at the end of 2023, 29,730,000 in 2024, 29,650,000 in 2025 and 29,920,000 in June 202689. Within that stable total the mix has shifted toward fee-based arrangements, which trade premium revenue for steadier service fees.
Employer & Individual revenue is the figure to watch. Steady growth would say employers keep choosing UnitedHealthcare's network; a decline would say rivals are winning the annual renewals.
Commercial membership steady near 30 million.
The diffuse commercial book; a decline would mean employers are moving to rivals at renewal.
