Construction IndustriesWide moat
Caterpillar (CAT) — moat facet
Caterpillar's construction business sells $25 billion of machines a year through dealers and earns between 19% and 25% on them, depending on price and the cycle.
Construction Industries is Caterpillar's machine business for contractors, and the part most exposed to both competition and the cycle. It had external sales of $24,800 million in 20251, about 37% of the company's total sales and revenues2, and total sales including intersegment of $25,060 million, on which it earned $4,675 million3.
What is inside is the familiar yellow fleet: excavators from mini to large, wheel loaders, track-type tractors, backhoe loaders, motor graders, asphalt pavers, compactors and compact track loaders4. The segment is responsible for customers using machinery in infrastructure and building construction, and the majority of its machine sales go to heavy and general construction, rental, quarry and aggregates and mining5.
It is paid through dealers. Caterpillar sells the machines to its independent dealers, who sell or rent them to contractors and service them for decades6. That makes reported sales sensitive to dealer inventory: Construction Industries' dealer inventory rose $1.9 billion in the first half of 20267.
The history is a cycle. External sales were $19,133 million in 20178, $16,876 million in 20209 and $27,294 million in 202310, before falling to $25,344 million in 2024 and $24,800 million in 202511.
Profitability swings with price. The segment earned 25.4% in 2023, 24.2% in 2024 and 18.7% in 20251213, the last after $1,136 million of negative price realization14 and about half of the company's tariff costs15. In the second quarter of 2026 the margin was back to 23.3% on sales up 35%, with North America up 50%16.
The outlook is strong for 2026: dealers are restocking and North American rental demand is high17. The segment's competitors are the longest list in Caterpillar's annual report18.
Regionally the line is American. In 2025 its external sales were $14,064 million in North America, $4,595 million in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, $3,783 million in Asia/Pacific and $2,358 million in Latin America19. In the second quarter of 2026, North America rose 50%, Latin America 25%, Europe, Africa and the Middle East 23% and Asia/Pacific only 3%20. Sales volume added $1.8 billion to the segment's quarter21.
Tariffs weigh more heavily here than anywhere else in the company. About half of Caterpillar's expected third-quarter 2026 tariff costs fall on Construction Industries22, against a quarter each for Power & Energy and Resource Industries.
The number that would change the verdict is the segment margin through the next slowdown. A margin that holds above 20% when volume falls would prove the pricing power; one that drops toward the mid-teens again would show this line is a cyclical business with a great dealer network, not more.
Margin back to 23.3% in Q2 2026 after 18.7% in 2025.
The largest machine line; falling again in 2026 despite the restock would mean underlying demand is weaker than the quarterly surge.
