OPACC: The Capital Charge Caterpillar Sets ItselfWide moat
Caterpillar (CAT) — moat facet
Caterpillar's manufacturing business earned about 53% pre-tax on its net assets in 2025, four times the 13% charge it sets itself.
Caterpillar judges its businesses with its own yardstick, and the yardstick shows how profitable the manufacturing business is once the finance arm is set aside. Operating profit after capital charge, or OPACC, subtracts a 13% pre-tax charge on average net assets of the machinery, power and energy business from its adjusted operating profit1.
The inputs are published. Average MP&E net assets were $19,450 million in 2023, $19,999 million in 2024 and $21,417 million in 2025, against MP&E adjusted operating profit of $13,439 million, $13,246 million and $11,327 million2. That is a pre-tax return on net assets of about 69%, 66% and 53%3, against the 13% charge.
Total enterprise OPACC was $2,066 million in 2020, $10,911 million in 2023 and $8,544 million in 20254. Caterpillar ties its incentive pay to it and says OPACC growth since 2020 was 4.1 times5.
The reason the numbers are so high is that the net asset base is small. Dealers hold the inventory that customers see, suppliers fund part of the rest, and the long-term receivables sit with Cat Financial. Manufacturing capital of about $21 billion produced about $11 billion of pre-tax operating profit in 20256.
The measure matters inside the company. Caterpillar says there is a strong correlation between OPACC dollar growth and shareholder returns, and reports top-quartile five-year total shareholder return against the S&P 500 capital goods index7. A company that pays its managers on returns above a capital charge is less likely to buy growth at any price.
This is the strongest evidence of a moat in Caterpillar's numbers, and it is measured by the company, which is its weakness. The pre-tax return on MP&E net assets fell from about 69% in 2023 to about 53% in 20258; a further fall toward 30% in a year of record sales would say the extra volume is being bought with capital.
Pre-tax return on MP&E net assets about 69% in 2023, 53% in 2025.
Caterpillar's own capital test; a fall toward 30% in a record year would mean volume is being bought with capital.
