✦ A $100 Billion Company by the 2030s?Narrow moat

Caterpillar (CAT) — the future bets

Caterpillar's targets would make it a company of roughly $92-109 billion of sales by 2030, with margins rising as it grows.

Caterpillar's broadest bet is on its own size. The Investor Day framework maps an adjusted operating margin target from 15-19% at $60 billion of sales to 21-25% at $100 billion1, and in April 2026 the company raised its target for enterprise sales growth to 6% to 9% a year from 2024 to 20302.

Running ahead of the target path.

From 2024's $64,809 million3, 6% a year gives about $92 billion in 2030 and 9% about $109 billion4. The upper end would put Caterpillar above $100 billion before the decade ends, and at the richer end of its margin framework.

2026 is running ahead. Sales and revenues are expected to grow in the mid-to-high teens5, and trailing twelve-month sales and revenues to June 2026 were about $74.7 billion6.

The framework also includes a promise about cash: MP&E free cash flow of $6 billion to $15 billion, with substantially all of it returned to shareholders over time7.

Management has also redrawn the margin framework to allow for investment. The deck notes an extended slope in the target range that reflects investments needed to grow8. In other words, the company expects to spend part of the gain from higher volume on the capacity and technology the growth requires.

This bet is the sum of the others and inherits all their risks. The number that tests it is the adjusted operating margin at each level of sales: if Caterpillar reaches $80 billion without the margin moving toward 21%, the framework was optimistic about how much of the growth would fall to profit.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Growth target raised to 6-9% a year; 2026 guided mid-to-high teens.

Progress toward the $92-109bn range for 2030; stalling below $80bn would miss the low end.

How it's calculated: FY2025 sales and revenues ($67,589M) less H1 2025 ($30,818M) plus H1 2026 ($37,958M).
