Construction Margins: 25.4% to 18.7%, and Back to 23.3%Narrow moat
Caterpillar (CAT) — moat facet
Caterpillar's construction margin fell from 25% to 19% in two years and was back to 23% by mid-2026, the mark of pricing power that is real but not unlimited.
Construction Industries' margin is the cleanest measure of Caterpillar's pricing power, and it has moved a long way in three years. The segment earned $6,975 million on $27,418 million of sales in 2023, $6,165 million on $25,455 million in 2024 and $4,675 million on $25,060 million in 20251: margins of 25.4%, 24.2% and 18.7%2.
The 2025 fall had three causes the company names: lower price, tariffs, and manufacturing costs3. Construction also bears about half of Caterpillar's tariff costs4.
The recovery in 2026 has been quick. Construction Industries' segment profit margin was 23.3% in the second quarter, against 20.1% a year earlier, on sales up 35%5. In the first half, the segment earned $3,482 million on $15,507 million of sales6, a margin of about 22.5%7. Price realization in the segment was $309 million in the second quarter8.
A margin that falls six points in a bad year and recovers most of it within six months is the mark of a franchise with real pricing power but not unlimited power. A true commodity would not have recovered so fast; a monopoly would not have lost so much.
The segment's sales bridge shows what drove the recovery. In the second quarter of 2026, higher sales volume of $1.8 billion and favourable price realization of $309 million lifted Construction Industries' sales by $2.156 billion9, and segment profit rose 57% to $1,947 million10.
The full-year 2026 Construction Industries margin is the number that settles it. Back above 23% would put 2025 down to tariffs and a soft market; stuck near 20% with volume growing would mean the rivals have taken some of the price for good.
23.3% in Q2 2026 after 18.7% in 2025.
The cleanest gauge of pricing; stuck near 20% with volume growing would mean rivals have taken price for good.
