A $72 Billion BacklogWide moat
Caterpillar (CAT) — moat facet
Caterpillar's firm order backlog grew from $30 billion to $72 billion in eighteen months, and $29 billion of it will not ship for more than a year.
Caterpillar's order book has changed character. The dollar amount of backlog believed to be firm was $30.0 billion at the end of 2024 and $51.2 billion at the end of 20251. By 30 June 2026 it was approximately $72.1 billion, about $9.4 billion higher than three months earlier, with the largest increase in Power & Energy2. That is 2.4 times the 2024 figure3 and close to a year of sales.
The book is also getting longer. Of the June 2026 backlog, approximately $29.2 billion was not expected to be filled in the following twelve months4; at the end of 2025 the equivalent was $19.3 billion5. On the second-quarter call, management said 59% of the $72 billion was expected to be delivered over the next twelve months, a share that had been fairly stable for three quarters6.
The growth is broad. The company says the backlog increased across the three primary segments7, and the oil and gas backlog is described as nearly double a year earlier in the call summary8.
A backlog this large does two things for a cyclical company. It gives visibility, since much of 2027 is already ordered; and it gives pricing leverage, since a customer who must wait until 2028 is not bargaining hard on price.
The stability of the near-term share is itself informative. Management said on the second-quarter 2026 call that the 59% share of backlog expected to ship within twelve months had been fairly stable over the past three quarters, which it took as evidence of momentum in all three primary segments9. A backlog growing at both ends is healthier than one growing only at the long end.
It is also the number most likely to reverse suddenly. The share expected to ship within twelve months is the thing to watch: if backlog stops rising while that share falls, orders are being pushed out rather than added.
Backlog $72.1bn at June 2026, up $9.4bn in a quarter.
Visibility and pricing leverage; a stalling backlog with a falling near-term share would mean orders are slipping.
