Caterpillar (CAT) — moat facet
No Caterpillar customer is large enough to disclose, but a handful of gigawatt-scale power buyers now sit inside a $72 billion backlog.
Caterpillar sells to almost everyone who moves earth, mines ore or needs power, and to none of them in amounts it has to disclose. Its annual report contains no revenue concentration disclosure, and it states that "No single customer or dealer represented a significant concentration of credit risk"1. Its direct customers are mostly its independent dealers, who resell to contractors, miners and utilities.
Revenue concentration and backlog concentration give different answers. The backlog of about $72.1 billion at 30 June 20262 includes some very large single orders: an order for 2 gigawatts of generator sets for the Monarch Compute Campus, which Caterpillar called one of its largest single orders for complete power solutions3. A report on the first-quarter 2026 call said six separate customer agreements now exceed 1 gigawatt each4. Caterpillar does not disclose how much of the backlog those customers represent.
The four client pages cover the four groups that matter most: the absence of any large named customer, North American contractors and their rental fleets, the copper and gold miners, and the customers who borrow from Cat Financial.
The workforce follows the customers. Of about 118,000 full-time employees at the end of 2025, 52,100 were in North America, 16,700 in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, 22,300 in Latin America and 26,900 in Asia/Pacific5. Latin America added 2,600 people in the year, the largest increase of any region67, which fits a company whose mining customers are spending on copper and gold.
The dealers themselves are also a kind of client, since Caterpillar's reported sales are mostly sales to them. Their behaviour is covered on the dealer pages; the essential point for concentration is that 150 independent firms89 stand between Caterpillar and its end users, and none of them is disclosed as material.
The customer base is a strength with one new concentration. Sales and revenues grew 24% in the second quarter of 202610, and the growth came from many customers. The power generation backlog is the exception to watch: if the next annual report discloses a customer above 10% of revenue or backlog, the concentration that the order book hints at will have become real.
No concentration disclosed; large power orders growing.
Growth spread across customers; a disclosed customer above 10% of revenue or backlog would mark a new concentration.
