⚠ A Dividend Paid Through a LossLow threat

Caterpillar (CAT) — threat to the moat

Caterpillar kept its dividend streak in 2016 by paying $3.08 a share while losing money.

In 2016 Caterpillar lost $67 million and declared dividends of $3.08 a share1. It kept the streak by paying out more than it earned, which a strong balance sheet allows once but not indefinitely.

Paid more than earned, twice.

The same thing nearly happened in 2017, when profit was $754 million, or $1.26 a share, against dividends of $3.112; that year's profit was depressed by restructuring and the US tax reform charge.

Today the cover is wide: dividends paid were about 31% of 2025 profit3. But Caterpillar also returns most of its free cash flow through buybacks, and the promise of high single-digit dividend increases4 commits it to raising the payment through the next downturn.

The balance sheet made it possible. Even in the loss year, Caterpillar kept spending on its equipment: capital expenditure on property, plant and equipment was $1,109 million in 2016 and $1,388 million in 2015, with a further $1,819 million and $1,873 million on equipment leased to others5. It paid the dividend and kept investing through the loss.

The streak's safety is measured by dividends against earnings in the next recession. Declared dividends above earnings for a second time would show the streak is being kept by the balance sheet rather than the business.
