✦ Digital Service: eCommerce and Condition MonitoringNarrow moat

Caterpillar (CAT) — the future bets

Caterpillar wants its connected machines to order their own parts, and has set a 2030 target of 500,000 tech-enabled machines from 191,000.

Caterpillar's services target depends on a digital bet: selling parts before the customer knows it needs them. Its 2030 targets include doubling condition-monitoring prioritized service events and raising eCommerce sales per business day by 50%, from gains of 1.5 times and 4% respectively in 20251. It aims to reach 2 million connected and reporting assets, from more than 1.6 million, and 500,000 tech-enabled machines, from 191,0002.

The connected fleet is ahead; tech-enabled machines are not.

The mechanism is simple. A connected machine reports its condition; the dealer sees a component wearing and schedules the replacement; the part is ordered, increasingly online. Each step keeps the sale with the Caterpillar dealer rather than a parts discounter or an independent repairer.

The digital bet supports the services target of $30 billion by 2030, from $24 billion in 20253. Services are defined as aftermarket parts and service-related revenues excluding most Financial Products revenues4, so the bet is mostly about parts.

The tech-enabled machine target is the most demanding: 500,000 against 191,000 means more than two and a half times the current number in five years5.

Connected machines were already more than 1.6 million at the end of 2025, the fourth-quarter call said6, and management listed condition-monitoring prioritized service events and eCommerce sales among the initiatives where it made progress7.

Services revenue is the proof. Growth faster than the roughly 4.6% a year needed to reach $30 billion8 would show the digital tools are adding sales; growth at that rate or below would show they are merely defending the existing base.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Connected assets above 1.6 million; targets set for 2030.

The fleet that can order its own parts; progress well below target would mean the services goal rests on price, not reach.
