The Revenue LinesWide moat
Caterpillar (CAT) — moat facet
Power & Energy overtook Construction Industries as Caterpillar's largest segment in 2025.
Caterpillar reports four segments that carry its revenue. On the basis of its 2025 annual report, external sales and revenues in 2025 were: Power & Energy $27,143 million, Construction Industries $24,800 million, Resource Industries $12,185 million and Financial Products $4,220 million1. An All Other segment added $46 million and corporate items and eliminations subtracted $805 million, mostly revenue Cat Financial earns from Caterpillar's own businesses, giving total sales and revenues of $67,589 million2.
The chart in this app shows the four segment bands for 2023 to 2025, and they sum to about $0.7-0.8 billion more than reported revenue each year because of those eliminations3. Earlier years are not on a consistent basis: the segments were redrawn in 2025, when Energy & Transportation became Power & Energy and some responsibilities moved between segments4.
The segments were redrawn again on 1 January 2026, when Rail moved from Power & Energy into Resource Industries. Caterpillar recast 2024 and 2025 on the new basis, unaudited5: Power & Energy's 2025 external sales become $23,747 million and Resource Industries' $15,581 million6. Quarterly figures from 2026 use the new basis.
The lines are moving apart. Power & Energy grew from $23,355 million in 2023 to $27,143 million in 2025, while Construction Industries fell from $27,294 million to $24,800 million7. In 2025, Power & Energy became the largest segment by external sales8.
The segments also trade with each other. Power & Energy supplies engines to the machine segments, and on the 2026 basis its intersegment sales were $4,877 million in 20259. That is why the segments' total sales, which include those internal transactions, add up to far more than the company's revenue, and why this chart uses external sales instead. Financial Products also books revenue from Caterpillar's own businesses, $712 million in 202510, which is removed on consolidation.
The recast changes the segment margins noticeably. Moving Rail cut Resource Industries' 2025 margin from 15.9% to 13.5% and lifted Power & Energy's from 19.9% to 21.9%1112. Readers comparing 2026 quarters with the 2025 annual report need to use the recast figures, not the audited ones.
The mix is the figure to follow. Power & Energy's share of external sales, about 40% in 202513, rising further would make Caterpillar less tied to construction; if the next downturn brings it back below a third, the company is still, at heart, a machine maker.
Power & Energy growing; construction flat to down.
How far Caterpillar has moved from construction; a fall back below a third in a downturn would mean it is still a machine maker.
