Trading Assets Up Forty-One PercentThin moat
Wells Fargo (WFC) — moat facet
Wells Fargo put its new freedom first into the trading book, which is the part of banking its deposit moat does least for.
The asset cap was lifted so that Wells Fargo could grow, and the quickest growth came in markets. Trading-related assets averaged $401.5 billion in the second quarter of 2026 against $283.7 billion a year earlier1, up about 41.5%2. Total average assets grew about 15% over the same period3.
Markets revenue followed. It was $6,562 million in 2023, $6,868 million in 2024 and $7,061 million in 20254, and $2,206 million in the second quarter of 2026, up 24%5. Equities revenue rose 64% in that quarter6.
This is a legitimate business. Wells Fargo has corporate clients who need hedging, financing and trading, and it could not give them balance sheet for seven years.
It is not where the moat is. Trading is priced by the market every day, and a bank wins it with capital and risk appetite, not with cheap household deposits. The margin says so: the net interest margin fell from 2.68% to 2.43% over the year7, partly because trading assets earn a thinner spread.
The bank itself links the growth to its balance sheet. Markets revenue rose "including the impact of balance sheet growth", driven by equities and most fixed income products8. That is an honest description of revenue bought with assets.
Trading is already a large fee line. Net gains from trading were $5,147 million in 20259, more than deposit-related fees of $5,099 million and second only to advisory fees among the fee lines.
The growth has changed the shape of the balance sheet. Corporate and Investment Banking's total assets were $862,472 million in June 202610, about 38% of the bank's $2,282,201 million11. A bank known for its branches now keeps close to two-fifths of its balance sheet in the wholesale segment. The rest sits in the consumer, commercial and wealth businesses and in Corporate. The mix has moved in eighteen months.
Watch the two lines together. If Markets revenue kept rising while trading assets grew faster still, the bank would be buying revenue with balance sheet at a falling return.
Trading-related assets $283.7bn to $401.5bn; Markets revenue +24% in Q2 2026.
The trading business the new balance sheet funds; revenue growing slower than trading assets would mean a falling return.
