JPMorgan: The Bank That Grew While Wells Could NotNarrow moat

Wells Fargo (WFC) — moat facet

JPMorgan pays more for its deposits than Wells Fargo and earns six points more on its equity.

JPMorgan is the rival against which Wells Fargo's lost years can be measured. JPMorgan had deposits of $2,559,320 million at the end of 20251, about 79% more than Wells Fargo's $1,426,207 million23. Its return on tangible common equity was 20%4, against Wells Fargo's 14.6%5.

Still five points behind on the underlying figure.

The two banks are not far apart on funding. JPMorgan's cost of total deposits was 1.80% in 20256; Wells Fargo's was about 1.52%7. JPMorgan's own page, What a Deposit Actually Costs, sets out its side of that number.

The difference is what each bank built on the deposits. JPMorgan's overhead ratio was 52%8; Wells Fargo's efficiency ratio was 66%9. And JPMorgan was free to grow through all the years Wells Fargo was capped.

The market values the gap at a multiple. JPMorgan was worth $911.91 billion in September 202610, about 3.6 times Wells Fargo's $250.90 billion1112.

The two chief executives are connected. JPMorgan's Jamie Dimon praised Charlie Scharf, "once his protege and a former executive at the bank", when the cap was lifted13.

JPMorgan also runs with more capital. Its CET1 ratio was 14.6% at the end of 202514, against 10.61% at Wells Fargo15, so its higher return is not bought with leverage.

The funding edge held through the peak of the rate cycle. JPMorgan's cost of total deposits was 2.08% in 202416, against Wells Fargo's about 1.80%17. It did not become a return advantage because the edge is about a quarter of a point on deposits while the cost gap is fourteen points of revenue. The difference is in how the money is used, not in what it costs. That is a problem Wells Fargo can fix itself, which is the hopeful reading.

The gap did not close in the latest quarter. JPMorgan reported a return on tangible common equity of 29%, or 23% excluding significant items, in the second quarter of 202618; Wells Fargo reported 17.7%19. A Wells Fargo return within three points of JPMorgan's underlying figure for a full year would mean the cap's damage was repaired.
