The Investment Banks It Is ChasingThin moat

Wells Fargo (WFC) — moat facet

Wells Fargo is climbing investment banking league tables mainly on the strength of its balance sheet.

In investment banking Wells Fargo is the challenger. It reported a leveraged finance share of 7.2%, third overall, and an equity capital markets share of 3.8%, up 74 basis points, for the first half of 20261. Its announced American M&A deal volume rank was fourth, up from ninth2.

Stronger in lending-led products than in pure advice.

The fee growth behind those rankings has its own page, Investment Banking Fees Up 43 Percent. What matters here is the kind of rivalry. The firms Wells Fargo is climbing past in the tables are advisory specialists and the investment banks of JPMorgan and Bank of America, which have been at it far longer.

Wells Fargo's advantage is that its clients already borrow from it. A leveraged finance share is partly a lending share, and a lender with a large balance sheet can win mandates that an adviser without one cannot.

Its disadvantage is the same. Winning deals with the balance sheet means taking risk that pure advisers do not take.

In 2025 the bank said its M&A ranking had risen from 12th to 8th3, and CIB investment banking revenue in the second quarter of 2026 was $628 million4.

Its trading business is built mostly on fixed income. Fixed income, currencies and commodities revenue grew from $4,688 million in 2023 to $5,292 million in 2025, while equities slipped from $1,809 million to $1,738 million5, so the desks where the largest investment banks compete hardest are still the smaller part. It is the trading franchise of a commercial bank, built on rates and credit.

The fee pool matters less to Wells Fargo than to its rivals. The bank's company-wide investment banking fees were $3,027 million in 20256, about 3.6% of revenue7; even a doubling of share would leave its results driven by its deposits.

The equity capital markets share is the cleanest test, because equity underwriting needs no loan. If it kept rising from 3.8%, the bank would be winning on advice; if it slipped while the lending shares held, the rankings would be the balance sheet speaking.
