$352 Billion in Eighteen MonthsNarrow moat
Wells Fargo (WFC) — moat facet
Wells Fargo added $352 billion of assets in eighteen months after the cap, more than it moved in the seven years before.
Once the cap was gone, Wells Fargo grew quickly. Total assets were $1,929,845 million at the end of 20241, $1,981,269 million in June 2025, $2,148,631 million at the end of 2025 and $2,282,201 million in June 20262. That is about $352 billion, or 18%, in eighteen months3.
The bank's chief executive framed it bluntly: after years of "not being on a level playing field with our competitors", the bank is "carefully deploying capital to grow"4. Average loans were up 12% and average deposits 10% in the year to the second quarter of 20265.
Under the cap, year-end assets never moved far from the limit. They ranged from $1,881,020 million to $1,952,911 million between 2018 and 20246.
The growth is real, but it did not arrive evenly. The Corporate and Investment Banking segment's total assets were $862,472 million in June 2026 against $658,029 million a year earlier, up 31%7, and the page on where the new balance sheet went follows that thread.
The second half of 2025 alone added about $167 billion of assets8, from $1,981,269 million in June to $2,148,631 million in December910. That is more than the bank's total assets moved in any year under the cap.
Under the cap the limit was measured on a two-quarter daily average basis11, so a bank near it had to manage its size every day. That discipline has gone, and so has the excuse for not growing.
The deposits did not keep pace with the assets. Period-end deposits rose from $1,371,804 million at the end of 202412 to $1,501,405 million in June 202613, about $130 billion14, against about $352 billion of new assets. The difference was funded in the wholesale markets, and that money costs more than the checking accounts that made the franchise. The cheapest money did not grow with the bank.
Total assets are the number that shows whether the bank means what it says. A pause in the growth would be sensible caution; a reversal would mean the bank had grown into assets it did not want.
Total assets $1,929,845M (Dec 2024) to $2,282,201M (June 2026).
The size the cap withheld; a reversal would mean the bank grew into assets it did not want.
